Historical silver items stolen as thieves target local church

Several historical silver items have been stolen as thieves targeted a local church in The Green, Kings Norton, overnight on the 18th-19th March.

It’s believed the offenders smashed a stained glass window at St Nicolas Church before stealing the items.

The Victorian window, featuring Jesus and Nicodemus, was broken during a burglary in 2021 and has since been restored.

Over 25 pieces of church silverware were taken during the break in including chalices, plates, jugs and a unique piece called a verge created by renowned Birmingham silversmith Eric Clements. Some of the items taken are irreplaceable and others are of personal significance as they have been dedicated in people’s memory.

Speaking about the thefts, Churchwarden Peter Hay said: “We are saddened by the loss of so many precious pieces of our church history. We would urge anyone with any information to contact West Midlands Police”.

The church is encouraging people on social media to share images of the stolen items to make it more difficult for the items to be sold on. They are also encouraging other churches to check their security arrangements as these type of crimes appear to be on the increase.

Birmingham Retirement Village rallies in support of marathon running colleague

Bournville Gardens Retirement Villagers picked up their running shoes this week to support one of their own.

As Hannah Makin ExtraCare’s Digital Marketing Officer gears up to tackle the London Marathon, Birmingham retirees and gym goers donned workout gear and took to Bournville Garden’s gym. Working across rowing machines, exercise bikes, and treadmills they each built up the miles progressively throughout the day to run equivalent marathon distances.

Under the watchful eye of Fitness Instructor Lindsey Thompson who has herself recently been nominated for a Heart & Soul award, residents and non-residents alike threw themselves into the challenge. External gym goer David Phipps, who managed 3.6 miles on the treadmill for the collective total commented: “Being in the gym is so important to live a healthier active life, and maintain and improve mental and physical health, I used to run marathons in the past so I’m very happy to take part today!”

Resident Barbara, is a regular visitor to the gym, attending every day, even at 87! She adds: “I’ve always been active. I’m constantly thinking what I can do to age well. I believe in things like this. I recently broke a bone in my foot so I can only do a few things today, but it’s about consistency, I’ll encourage anyone to make an effort, with consistent gym work our generation could save the NHS so much money. I absolutely adore it here.”

Resident Claire who has progressive MS joined the effort on a THERA-Trainer machine a motor-assisted stationary cycling trainer for legs and upper body. She adds: “I made a decision when I came here last July to try and be as active as I can. I attend the gym once a week alongside Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s important to join in with something like this, I like to get involved in as many things as I can, it helps that I have a positive outlook on life.”

34 residents and staff took part in the event and together managed to clock up 112 miles, with over £160 raised for the charity. As well as the marathon effort residents also shared their support by taking part in a group walk around the village gardens.

The London marathon is always a memorable event for participants and supporters alike especially with the entire charity behind their young colleague. Hannah who will be running in April to raise money for the charity commented: “I’ve been blown away by how many people have come out to support here, I wondered if we’d be able to manage a single equivalent marathon but at Bournville we’ve managed over four marathon distances with a 112 mile target achieved. It has been great to meet so many new faces and see how much the gym and exercising has helped transform the lives of residents.”

Two other Birmingham locations operated by the charity, Pannel Croft Village and New Oscott Village will be following suit over the next month and encouraging residents and gym members to take up the challenge and join the fundraising effort.

Two guilty of murdering Cody Fisher at Digbeth nightclub

From West Midlands Police

Two men have today been found guilty of the murder of Cody Fisher, who was stabbed to death on the dancefloor of a Birmingham nightclub on Boxing Day, 2022.

The semi-professional footballer had been on a night out with friends when he was attacked following an ‘insignificant’ encounter with one of the killers two nights earlier.

Cody, aged 23, had accidentally bumped into Remy Gordon at Popworld in Solihull and the pair exchanged a few words.

Cody Fisher

But Gordon refused to forget the encounter, and set about trying to identify Cody from social media images he found of him on other nights out.

He learned Cody’s name, and that he was likely to be at the Crane nightclub on Adderley Street in Digbeth on Boxing Day.

Inside the Crane, just before midnight on Boxing Day, Cody was surrounded before being headbutted, punched and kicked. He was stabbed once in the chest and died from the wound at the scene.

A major investigation was launched, with officers spending hundreds of hours reviewing CCTV footage from the Crane, as well as examining social media messaging.

It identified Gordon, as well as Kami Carpenter and Reegan Anderson as being present on the night.

Remy Gordon

Today at Birmingham Crown Court after a trial lasting two months, Gordon, of Cofton Park Drive, Rednal, and Carpenter, of Owens Croft, Kings Norton were convicted of murder. Gordon was also found guilty of affray.

Anderson, of Brookvale Park Road, Erdington, was cleared of murder, but found guilty of affray.

They will be sentenced at a later date.

Kami Carpenter

Det Insp Michelle Thurgood, who led the investigation, said: “The absolute tragedy of this case is just how trivial the motive was.

“It’s the kind of thing that most right-minded people would have just ignored and moved on, but Remy Gordon, for reasons only he can explain, took real exception to this.

“It was a chance brushing together of two men who did not know each other and had no reason to fall out.

Cody Fisher

“Cody’s life has been cut tragically short, and it’s had a catastrophic impact on his family and friends.”

Today Cody’s mother Tracey described her son as her ‘youngest boy, best friend and her angel’, and said she and her family started ‘our life sentences’ on Boxing Day 2022 – the saddest, most heart-breaking day of our lives.”

She said: “Cody’s father, brother and the rest of his living family who miss him dearly are suffering.

Reegan Anderson

“Cody truly never had a bad bone in his body. He loved teaching young children.

“He loved, cared for and respected his family. He had more living to do and so much more love and kindness to give to the world.

“Cody taught us all so much about ourselves and we miss him every single minute of every day.

Cody Fisher and his mum Tracey

“I will not get to see him go on to do more amazing things, like inspire many more children and adults as he used to do, have holidays with him and go to his footie matches every week to see him kick a ball like he’d done from the day he could walk.

“Sadly, I will never see my son live on through his children and as such never enjoy any grandchildren from him.

Cody Fisher and his dad Christian

“Cody Fisher was brave, fearless and the most genuine soul I knew, I had the pleasure and honour to call him my son, may you rest in peace my beautiful boy.”

Everyone has got a role to play in tackling knife crime. We will continue to make arrests and work to make the West Midlands safer, but it’s just as important that parents, carers and teachers speak to young people about the devastating impact of knife crime.

We know that can be a difficult conversation to have, we we’ve got a dedicated website to make the conversation easier.
